Taipower to fortify EV charging with rising demand for EV

2021/03/15 | By EDN

While electric vehicles are becoming more common among drivers, Foxconn's MIH Open Platform saw new members, rounding up the total of membership at around 800 companies. Experts say this is a clear indicator that Taiwan's EV market will continue to build momentum in the future.

Taiwan's state-owned electric power supplier Taipower quoted the IEA's statistics that in 2019, the global ratio of charging stations per EV was at 12 EVs to 1 station. According to European Union guidelines, the golden ratio is 10 EVs to 1 station. Taiwan's ratio as of January 2021 is an average of 4:1, with passenger EVs at around 10,000 and around 3,000 stations nationwide.

To avoid power shortages for EV drivers in the future, Taipower is considering low voltage solutions to help EV drivers charge their cars at home, including separate supply lines inside a household, referring to foreign electric power suppliers' power rates, and time-of-day rates to encourage charging outside of high-demand periods. Taipower is also looking to set up electricity meters on the first floor or the same floor or vicinity of the charging area.
