Huawei's Big Strides in the Smart Vehicle Industry

2020/11/17 | By EDN

Huawei is reported to combine its Consumer BG and Intelligent Vehicle BU operations, according to local media, as the Chinese cellphone maker looks to expand its presence in smart vehicles.

Reports point to Huawei Consumer BG CEO Yu Chengdong, taking up the mantel to oversee the combined departments. The two departments have integrated investments from both sides, while no change was brought forth regarding personnel and operations.

Industry watchers highly regard the move as Huawei's attempt to accelerate its presence in the smart vehicle market, having faced all-around restrictions from the U.S. ban in the smartphone segment.

Chinese publishing company 36Kr reported Huawei CEO Ren Zhengfei had greenlighted the internal bid to open up a smart vehicle solution BU last May. At the time, Ren was adamant that Huawei would not become a car manufacturer but rather offer ICT solutions for auto firms.

Media reports indicate Huawei accelerating its presence in the smart vehicle sector. It announced its smart vehicle solution brand HI (Huawei Intelligent) at the end of October, while Yu Chengdong had reportedly led a delegation to smart car maker ARCFOX.. ARCFOX's recent new high-end smart SUV αT, is among the first models for mass production with Huawei's new generation MH5000 5G chips T-BOX.
