Thanks to increasing demand for center-console information displays and multifunction monitors for eco-friendly vehicles, shipments of automotive thin film transistor-liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD) panels are expected to increase 16% year-over-year to exceed 65 million units in 2013, and more than 90 million units by 2017, according to the latest NPD DisplaySearch Automotive Displays Report.

"The global demand for electric and hybrid cars, and electronic control systems is on the rise," said Hiroshi Hayase, vice president of small/medium displays for NPD DisplaySearch. "As navigation becomes standard on more vehicles, the demand for multifunctional automotive TFT-LCD monitors will continue to grow."

The market for TFT-LCD automotive displays was originally shared by Japanese LCD makers; however, as global demand rises, display manufacturers in Taiwan, Korea, and China have been increasing output.

In 2013, Innolux Display Corp., the largest TFT-LCD panel maker in Taiwan, is expected to lead the automotive TFT-LCD display market with a share of 22%, followed by Japan Display Inc. (JDI, a joint venture formed between Innovation Network, Sony, Toshiba, and Hitachi of Japan) at 21%, and Sharp at 20%.

The 2013 leader in automotive monitor procurement is global Tier-1 Continental of Germany with a share of 13%, followed by Panasonic of Japan at 11%, and American automaker Ford Motor at 9%, NPD DisplaySearch said.
