Polarizer and Backlight-module Score Double-digit Growths in Production Value in 2012
2012/11/29 | By Andrew WangTaipei, Nov.29, 2012 (CENS)--A report from ITIS (Industry & Technology Intelligence Service) shows Taiwan's display industry seeing slowing growth in 2012, with production value this year up 0.6% slightly to NT$1.4 trillion (US$46.67 billion), among which large-sized panels and color filter both showing shrinking production values. In contrast, polarizer and backlight modules both scored double-digit growths due to plant expansions and strong shipment growth for tablet PCs, respectively.
Taiwan's total production value of display in the third quarter grew 11.5% quarter on quarter (QoQ) to NT$370.67 billion (US$12.36 billion). Of which, panel industry contributed NT$242.47 billion (US$8.08 billion) in production value, up 12.6% QoQ, while key component industry saw 9.3% QoQ increase to NT$128.19 billion (US$4.273 billion). Among the key component segment, production value of color filter, polarizer, grass substrate, and backlight module reached NT$27.2 billion (US$906.67 million), NT$23.51 billion (US$783.67 million), NT$37.39 billion (US$1.25 billion), and NT$40.09 billion (US$1.34 billion), respectively.
Due to high season effect and growing pull-in deliveries by distribution channels, production value of large-sized panels in the third quarter rose mildly from the second quarter to NT$187.12 billion (US$6.24 billion).
Benefiting from growing demand for medium & low-end smartphones in China, and frequent new releases of tablet PCs by brand vendors, production value of small & medium-sized panels in the third quarter increased 16.5% QoQ to NT$50.51 billion (US$1.68 billion), with an estimated 8.8% QoQ growth to NT$54.95 billion in the fourth quarter.
Production value of color filters in the fourth quarter is predicted to grow a little to NT$28.32 billion (US$944 million), thanks to increasing production capacity of large-sized panels and shipments of small-sized ones, and improvement in capacity utilization. The polarizer industry is expected to see production value up 8.1% QoQ to NT$25.41 billion (US$847 million) in the fourth quarter.
