Quanta Stays Taiwan's Top NB PC Maker by Sales Revenue in Q1

2012/04/11 | By Steve Chuang

Taipei, April 11, 2012 (CENS)--While the rankings of Taiwan's top five notebook PC manufacturers was slightly reshuffled in terms of sales revenues for the first quarter of this year, Quanta Computer Inc. remains atop the list despite suffering a revenue drop.

Quanta reported sales revenue of NT$224.62 billion for the first quarter of the year, declining 24% from a quarter earlier or 10.61% from a year earlier, to lead the industry.

Wistron Corp. raked in NT$176.971 billion in sales revenue for the quarter to outpace Compal Electronics Inc., whose corresponding revenue figure reached only NT$161.074 billion, as Taiwan's No.2 contract manufacturer of this kind. In fact, the former already outdid the latter in the third quarter and the fourth of last year in terms of single-quarter combined revenues,

Market observers noted that Wistron is likely to finish this year with laptop shipment of over 36.5 million units, up 15-20% from the corresponding figure posted in 2011, primarily because the firm has recently secured increasing orders from HP and Lenovo. Separately, the firm will ship an estimate of 7.5 million laptops to HP, 6.5 million units to Acer, 7 million units to Dell and 3.5 million units to Sony this year.

The company's another revenue engine is the strong shipment of non-laptop products, including servers, storage systems and cloud computing hardware. For example, the firm has recently garnered Facebook's new order for about 100,000 units of cloud computing servers, which will help to contribute up to NT$10 billion to its annual revenue in the year.

Despite a rout by Wistron in the quarter earlier, Compal has been poised to stage a comeback starting in the second quarter, when the firm will step up delivery of ultrabooks to Lenovo and Dell. Hopefully, Compal will finish the second quarter with laptop shipment of over 9 million units, and will retain its second place in the top five rankings by annual revenue this year.

Pegatron Corp. advanced to the fourth-largest spot with sales revenue of NT$144.861 billion in the first quarter of this year, mainly thanks to new contract orders from Apple, Acer and Toshiba.

In the meantime, Inventec Corp. posted sales revenue of only NT$82.653 billion in the quarter and thus fell one notch in the rankings, due partly to the aftermaths of its major customer HP halting its TouchPad business last year.
