2011/08/02 | By Ben Shen

On July 8, the BSI (British Standards Institution) presented BSI PAS 2050:2008 carbon-footprint certifications to products made by the G-Fun Enterprise Co., Taiwan's leading manufacturer of functional textiles. At the same time the BSI signed a memorandum of understanding with the government-funded Taiwan Textile Institute (TTI), which witnessed the presentation, for sustainable environment management.

Eight of G-Fun's product lines were certified by BSI. This is the most carbon-footprint certifications won by any textile manufacturer so far.

Founded 110 years ago, BSI is dedicated to instituting international standards for various industries to follow. BSI Taiwan managing director Peter Pu says that textile manufacturing has become a high-tech industry, and that many textile manufacturers worldwide have adopted the concept of recycling in their manufacturing processes. This will help the world cut carbon emissions.

G-Fun, founded in 1999, is a knowledge-based manufacturer of textile materials and the first Taiwanese firm to develop thermal breathable ceramic printing techniques. The company has also made big progress in the development of microporous coating techniques, microporous lamination techniques, biomass material waterproof and breathable techniques for coating and lamination, green moisture cured lamination, lightweight air permeability and windproof lamination techniques, and functional membrane production techniques.

Before they established G-Fun, the firm's founding partners had worked in TTI's laboratory for more than 10 years, where they engaged in specific research projects and developed the desire to create their own enterprise.

G-Fun constantly seeks ways to maintain a balance with Mother Nature through the 3Rs: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle.

The company supplies functional coating and lamination on an OEM/ODM (original equipment/design manufacturer) basis. It focuses on competitive products and technical textile solutions that can cope with all kind of severe weather conditions.

G-Fun president Tsai Chiu-hsiung says that his “green strategy” is aimed at the less-competitive “Blue Ocean” market. “We consider such environmental-protection regulations as ‘Oeko Tex' and ‘Bluesign' as the fundamentals of a green enterprise,” he notes, “and we incorporate the ‘Oeko Tex' and ‘Bluesign' spirit in our business strategy, marketing, and innovation.” (BS, July 2011)
