Manpower Demand in Taiwan to Hit 5-Year High in Q3

Taipei, June 10, 2011 (CENS)--Taiwan's manpower demand in the third quarter is estimated to rise by 110,000 persons from a quarter earlier, but to post a net rise of 101,000 persons after deducting the potential dismissal of 8,700 employees during the quarter to set a new five-year high, according to the survey by the Council of Labor Affairs (CLA).

The survey was conducted between the end of April and early May, polling enterprises with 30-and-more staffers and having received 3,080 valid responses, 41.37% of which said employees will be hired in the third quarter, 50.74% would not change personnel, 2.7% will downsize staff, and the remaining 5.17% being undecided.

The CLA attributes the expected surging demand for manpower in the coming quarter to the global economic recovery, strong consumption willingness, growing orders from international IT and electronics firms, and foreseeable business from ballooning Chinese tourists, as well as diverted orders from Japan after the devastating earthquake and tsunami.

Manufacturers intend to hire 49,000 persons, the highest among the industries on the island, of which 14,000 persons will be hired by electronics & related parts sector, 6,900 persons by metal products sector and 10,600 persons by wholesale & retail sector. Besides, lodging, F&B sector plans to add 6,800 persons, supporting service sector 6,100 persons and medical, healthcare & social service sector 5,900 persons.

Some 85,000 newly hired people will be permanent workers, 7,780 persons temporary or seasonal, and 2,218 persons will be on-call.
