Taiwan's OCWs Grow 10% to 193,545 Persons in 2010
2011/04/08 | By Judy LiTaipei, April 8, 2011 (CENS)--The number of OCWs or overseas contract workers in Taiwan reached 193,545 in 2010, up 10% or 17,472 from 176,073 recorded a year earlier, according to a survey by the Council of Labor Affairs (CLA).
The survey shows that over 70% of OCWs engage in laborious or low-end technical work, with the electronic parts industry hiring 36,450 persons, the highest among all industries on the island. The metal manufacturing and textile industries followed with corresponding 19,148 persons and 18,125 persons, respectively.
The average monthly pay of OCWs in 2010 was NT$23,133 (US$746.23), up slightly by NT$49 (US$1.58) from 2008's NT$23,084 (US$744.65).
