Taiwan's Machine Tool Exports Jump 56.8% in First Seven Months

Taipei, Oct. 5, 2010 (CENS)--Taiwan exported US$1.549 billion of machine tools in the first seven months of 2010, for a year-on-year growth of 56.8% from a year earlier, according to statistics compiled by the Taiwan Machine Tool Foundation (TMTF).

Exports for metal-cutting machine tools came to US$1.19 billion, up 58.6% and that for metal-forming machine tools totaled US$358.61 million, up 51.2%.

The exports of machining centers shot up 78.2% year-on-year, lathes 22.2%, grinding machines 88.3%, and drilling, boring and milling machines 67%. The exports of presses and shearing machines rose 48% year-on-year over the first seven months, with that of other metal-forming machines up 63.4%.

China and Hong Kong together led as export outlet by absorbing US$747.03 million of Taiwan-made machine tools in the first seven months, surging 104% year-on-year for 48.2% of the total exports. The U.S. was second with US$75.94 million, down 11.5% and commanding 4.9%. India was third with US$63.87 million, up 112% and accounting for 4.1%.

Other major export outlets, in descending order, included Thailand, Brazil, Malaysia, Turkey, South Korea, Indonesia, Vietnam, Germany, the Netherlands, Italy, Japan and Australia.

The TMTF's tallies also show Taiwan imported US$327.84 million of machine tools in the first seven months, up 77.1% year-on-year, including metal-cutting machine tools totaling US$269.03 million, up 80.5% and metal-forming machine tools amounting to US$58.8 million, rising 62.9%.

Japan was the island's largest supplier by selling US$198.46 million of machine tools to Taiwan in the first seven months, up 154% year-on-year for 60.5% of the total imports. Germany was second with US$17.18 million, down 8.8% and commanding 8.3%. China and Hong Kong together ranked third with US$20.49 million, up 53.6% and commanding 6.2%.

TMTF chief executive C.C. Wang says the leading producing nations of Asia, European Union and North America believe they will see substantial growths in production and exports of machine tools in 2010 based on outstanding sales in the first seven months.
