Acer, ASUS Report Robust PC Shipments to Western Europe in Q2
2010/09/01 | By Quincy LiangTaipei, Sept. 1, 2010 (CENS)--Acer Inc. (Acer brand) and Asustek Computer Inc. (ASUS), both Taiwan-based computer vendors, reported highest growth among global counterparts in shipments of personal computers to Western Europe in the second quarter.
According to latest data released by market research firm Gartner, Inc., PC shipments in Western Europe totaled 15.6 million units in the second quarter of 2010, a 19.6% increase from the same period of 2009.
In the second quarter of 2010, Acer moved to the No. 1 position in Western Europe as a result of strong growth in consumer PCs. ASUS and vendors outside the top-five list experienced strong growth, with Apple, Sony, Samsung and Lenovo all growing above 30% year-on-year (YoY) in the second quarter.
Ranjit Atwal, research director at Gartner, said that: "Despite the increased economic concerns, the Western European PC market is the most competitive we have seen for many years. It is now a market influenced by the top 10, and not just by the top five vendors."
In terms of shipments, Acer kept its No. 1 position unchanged in the second quarter with a 23.7% market share, followed by HP with 21.6%, Dell 10.1%, ASUS 8.5%, and Fujitsu 5.9%.
"The strong performance in the second quarter of 2010 was due partly to a weak second quarter of 2009. Economic concerns in several southern European countries (Spain, Portugal, Italy and Greece) created uncertainty in the PC market and caused more volatility in the second quarter of 2010, rather than softening overall demand," Atwal said.
Acer delivered 36.96 million PCs in Western Europe in the second quarter, extending the leading distance from No.2 HP to 2.1 percentage points from 0.8 of a percentage point in the first quarter, further consolidating its leading position in the regional market.
