AUO to Show Power-saving Technologies at FPD Int'l 2008 in Japan

2008/10/28 | By Ken Liu

Taipei, Oct. 28, 2008 (CENS)--AU Optronics Corp. (AUO), the largest thin film transistor-liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD) panel manufacturer in Taiwan, will showcase its latest innovations of "green panels" at FPD International 2008 held from Oct. 29 through 31 in Yokohama, Japan.

The main theme for AUO this year parallels that of the FPD International 2008: Displays Trigger a Lifestyle Revolution--Ambient & Green.

Among AUO's Green Innovations exhibits at the FPD show will be a wide array of innovative energy-saving technologies, such as the "Eco Plus" Full HD TV panel. Such technology saves both the energy consumed (during operation) and materials used (in production). In addition, AUO's ultra-slim 46-inch light-emitting diode (LED)-backlight panel is only 10 mm-less thick; while the firm's new 8.9-inch mini-note PC (netbook) application panel saves up to 45% in terms of power consumption.

Manifesting its four major principles of "Green Innovation" related to product development and manufacturing: energy saving, material saving, environment friendly, and lean design, AUO will also show a series of green designs from 8.9-inch mini-note PC application to 46-inch TV panels, offering clients and the consumer market a comprehensive range of green panels with ultra slim, energy-saving features.

AUO claims that its Eco Plus design of 46-inch green TV panel reduces weight by 30%, thickness by 30%, and brings power savings of up to 30%. The package efficiency also rises by 66% due to the reduction of packaging space and delivery weight. The 46-inch RGB Full-HD LED-backlit panel with local dimming technology offers high dynamic contrast, and it saves an average of 50% power relative to cold cathode fluorescent lamps (CCFL) counterparts, but attaining a high image quality at the same time.

Another display focus by AUO at the FPD show will be its 10.1-inch WVGA resolution (854x480 pixel) green panel with LED backlight and driver IC. The LED-backlit technology, CABC (content adaptive backlight control), can adjust the backlight dynamically according to the environment luminance, which saves the backlight power by up to 50%, AUO said.
