2008/07/23 | By Ken LiuTaipei, July 23, 2008 (CENS)--Shipments of organic light-emit diode (OLED) panels and mini-note PC-application displays are expected to enjoy compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 167% and 74% from 2007 to 2015, according to the latest Q2 '08 Worldwide Flat Panel Forecast Report released by DisplaySearch.
The latest report by DisplaySearch, the worldwide leader in display market research and consulting, forecast the top-10 growth prospects for flat-panel applications: OLED TV, mini-note PC, digital photo frame, public display, notebook PC, LCD TV, industrial, automotive monitor, portable navigation device (PND), and portable media player (PMP).

David Barnes, vice president of strategic analysis for DisplaySearch, said that OLED TV and mini-note PC applications are the next big opportunity for flat panel suppliers. "Last year, we identified the potential for digital picture frame demand to lead unit growth," Barnes said. "That application is still growing strong but these two applications will be even stronger."
Shipments of flat panels for all applications decreased 12% from the fourth quarter of 2007 to 881.7 million units due to normal seasonal weakness in the first quarter of 2008. Compared to the first quarter of 2007, shipments increased 15%, led by demand for mini-note PCs, digital picture frames and portable navigation devices.
On a unit share basis, DisplaySearch pointed out, cellphone applications consumed 45.8% of all flat panels in the first quarter of 2008. By comparison, the next largest consumption came from conventional PC applications for desktop and laptop displays, which used 9.1% of the flat panels shipped. Panels for LCD TV and plasma TV sets comprised 3.5% of shipments. On a display area basis, thin film transistor-liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD) technology provided 88.6% of total flat panel display (FPD) area in the first quarter of 2008.
