ITRI Debuts Taiwan’s First Micro LED AR Smart Glasses, Pioneering Outdoor Usability
2024/12/16 | By Andrew HsuThe Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI), in partnership with LED chip manufacturer Harvatek Corporation and smart glasses maker ChaseWind, has introduced Taiwan’s first AR smart glasses powered by Micro LED technology. These innovative glasses boast full high-definition (FHD) resolution, tenfold brightness, and low energy consumption, effectively overcoming the challenge of limited outdoor usability in traditional AR smart glasses.
According to Shih-Chieh Chang, General Director of Electronic and Optoelectronic System Research Laboratories at ITRI, the global AR/VR market is projected to reach US$597.5 billion by 2030, driven by increasing demand across sectors such as entertainment, education, travel, retail, and healthcare.
To enhance AR display performance, ITRI has dedicated years to developing Micro LED technology for virtual and augmented reality applications. This breakthrough includes achieving pixel spacing under 4 microns and precisely transferring Micro LEDs onto CMOS substrates for semiconductor circuit integration, addressing critical challenges in positioning accuracy.
Looking ahead, Micro LED technology is poised to revolutionize a wide array of applications, including smart wearable devices, automotive displays, transparent screens, and ultra-large TVs. In the AR and mixed reality (MR) sectors, Micro LED’s high brightness and resolution are expected to play a pivotal role in creating deeply immersive experiences.
ITRI remains committed to integrating cutting-edge technology with industrial advancements, driving the evolution of Taiwan’s metaverse-related industries and smart technology ecosystem.
