HTC Witnesses Market Shares in U.S. Grow in Jun.-Aug.

2012/10/24 | By Steve Chuang

Taipei, Oct. 24, 2012 (CENS)--Taking over part of the shares that RIM lost, HTC Corp., a Taiwanese smartphone vendor, saw its market share in the U.S. edge up by 0.2 of a percentage point to 6.3% in June through August from the figure achieved in March through May to rank as No.5 brand, according to the latest report issued by the local market researcher comScore MobiLens.

The comScore’s report indicates that Samsung commanded a 25.7% share of the U.S. market for smartphones and ordinary handsets as the biggest brand during the period, followed by LG with 18.2% and Apple with 17.1%. Motorola took the fourth place with an 11.2% share.

The market researcher pointed out that LG, Motorola and RIM suffered declines in market shares, due partly to shrinking sales of feature phones and partly to their smartphones outsold by competitors. This allowed Apple to narrow the gap between itself and the LG while enabling HTC to push up its market share in the period as a result.

Noteworthily, the top five brands together commanded a 78.5% share of the overall market for handsets in the U.S., leaving little room for other rivals, according to comScore’s report.

In terms of mobile operating system part, the report shows that Android made up 52.6% of the U.S. market from June to August, up 1.7 percentage points from the March-May period, while iOS accounted for 34.3%, 2.4 percentage points more. In contrast, market shares of the other mobile operating systems among the top fives, namely Blackberry, Windows Mobile and Symbian, all dropped.
