Projector Sales in Taiwan Down 12% YoY in Q2: IDC Taiwan

2012/08/06 | By Quincy Liang

Taipei, Aug. 6, 2012 (CENS)--Some 22,743 projectors were sold in Taiwan in the second quarter of the year, down 11.9% year-on-year (YoY) and 11.6% quarter-on-quarter (QoQ), according to statistics released by IDC Taiwan, local subsidiary of the global provider of market intelligence, which attributed the sales drop to lacking major governmental and educational institutional purchases, as well as poor domestic economic performance.

Leon Kao, market analyst at IDC Taiwan's PC & Peripherals Group, said that without the big-ticket purchases from governmental and educational institutions, the overall domestic projector market saw clear shipment decline. In addition, the poor economy has been hampering consumers from purchasing new projectors. In the second quarter, home projector market shipment fell 14% YoY.

Projectors priced at less than NT$20,000 (US$667) remained mainstream in Taiwan. About 6,300 units of sub-NT$20,000 projectors were sold in the second quarter (compared to over 8,000 units sold in the first quarter), or 27.7% of the overall market. Models priced between NT$20,000 to NT$30,000 (US$1,000) together accounted for 17.5% (17%), with those priced NT$30,000-NT$40,000 (US$1,333) accounting for 24.2% (24%) of overall shipments.

The 2,500-3,999 lumen models remained the market mainstream during the second quarter, taking a 65% (65%) share of the total, with extended graphics array (XGA: 1024 x 768 pixels) models taking a market share of about 64% (70%).

Epson, Optoma, BenQ, NEC and were the top-five brands in Taiwan's projector market in the first quarter (Epson, Optoma, Viewsonic, Panasonic and NEC), commanding a combined share of 74.3%, with the long-term leader Epson winning a 24% share (23.5%).

IDC Taiwan forecasts that Taiwan's projector market in the second half need to be further observed. Under weak domestic demand, projector vendors are trying to push higher-level high-brightness models in a try to upgrade revenue and shipments.
