China Electric Mfg. to Release 7.5W LED Bulb

2012/03/27 | By Ken Liu

Taipei, March 27, 2012 (CENS)--China Electric Mfg. Corp., currently Taiwan’s No.1 lamp maker, plans to release 7.5W LED light bulbs retailed below NT$400 (US$13 at US$1:NT$30) sometime in April to stimulate consumption of the bulbs.

The price range represents a huge markdown from NT$500 (US$16) for 7W bulbs it launched last year, as well as a 25% cut from the price of the first batch of 7.5W bulbs it introduced previously.

The company estimated cut-rate strategy would help it achieve the goal of selling 500,000-600,000 LED light bulbs for around NT$200 million (US$6.6 million) in revenue by the end of this year, quadrupling from last year’s volume.

The company’s general manager, Z.W. Chang, stressed that only cutting down prices can make LED light bulbs become prevalent rapidly.

At the heart of the company’s cut-price plan is LED chips sourced from Taiwan’s homegrown Lextar Electronics Corp.

Also, the company will make availability of its 9W and 12W LED bulbs as replacement for 60W incandescent bulbs as well as intelligent LED lighting control system based on smartphones next quarter. Chang pointed out that the 9W bulbs will go on sales next month to rival 8W bulbs with their 35% more light output.

Chang said the LED lighting sales would increase to account for around 30% of the company’s revenue this year, up from last year’s 10%.

Throughout 2011, the lamp maker had non consolidated revenue of NT$6.9 billion (US$230 million), rising 12.82% year on year. After-tax net income from 2011 operation was NT$531 million (US$17.7 million), or NT$1.34 per diluted share, the best in three years.
