Taipei, May 16, 2005 (CENS)--Motorola Inc. of the United States, a global communications leader, plans to help Taiwan companies develop auto-telecom and auto-electronics businesses by providing advanced mobile telecom technologies and related solutions, according to Simon Leung, regional president of Motorola's Asia-Pacific operations.

According to Leung, Motorola Asia-Pacific has negotiated with Rock Hsu, chairman of Taiwan Electric and Electronic Manufacturers Association (TEEMA) on the issue. Hsu is concurrently chairman of Kinpo Electronics, Inc. ( a leading local electronics maker) and Compal Electronics, Inc. ( a leading notebook PC maker). He is expected to bridge the cooperation projects between Motorola and major local electronics/information technology (IT) manufacturers in auto-electronics related fields.

In addition to providing needed technologies and solutions, Motorola would also try to tie up with local partners to help them develop automobile telecom and auto-electronic equipment products with international auto makers.

Leung claimed that Motorola is simultaneously developing four major businesses around the world, including cell phone, networking system, broadband and government & enterprise mobility solutions (GEMS), with the first still accounting for the largest portion of Motorola's revenue and the third and fourth expected to enjoy the highest growth in the future.

Motorola has decided to develop auto-electronic business on both sides of the Taiwan Strait in full swinh, Leung said. The company has set up an auto-electronic R&D center in Tianjin, mainland China, which is developing engine management system (EMS), power steering, and automobile telecom/positioning system products in cooperation with international automakers such as GM, BMW, and Audi, as well as local automakers in China. But Motorola's auto-electronic business development in Taiwan is just at an initial stage.

TEEMA officials pointed out that Hsu led a Taiwanese auto-electronic delegation to participate in the second International Forum for the Development of Automobile and Auto Parts Industries, which was held on April 27 in Qingdao, Shangdon Province, mainland China.

The Taiwan delegation comprised representatives of many major IT and electronics makers in Taiwan, including Delta Electronics, Inc., Action Electronics Co., Ltd., Universal Scientific Industrial Co., Ltd., Kinpo Electronics Inc., Kinpo Electronics Inc., and Walsin Technology Corp. etc. They conducted face-to-face negotiations with an American engineering trade delegation over issues on product delivery, techniques and original equipment manufacturing (OEM) in a bid to win more businesses from the U.S.
