The Economic Roundup is an excerpted translation of the Chinese-language ROC Economic Yearbook published by the Economic Daily News, a sister publication of the Taiwan Economic News. The yearbook is the most comprehensive and authoritative source for understanding the fundamentals of Taiwan's economy, both in the macro and micro aspects. The excerpted translation gives foreign readers a concise view of the island's overall economic picture. It is divided into four parts: general economy, primary industries, secondary industries, and tertiary industries.

 Tertiary Industry > Security Industry
2005 was a year of rapid growth for the security industry. Due to the pickup in the economy and the launch of new services, such as financial image-monitoring security and mobile security, the security enjoyed brisk business growth. Both SECOM Co., Ltd. And Shin Kong Security turned in remarkable performances in terms of both revenue and profits, with the latter boasting revenue growth of over 18%, a new high in recent years.

In 2005, major growth driver for the security industry was financial image security. In the wake of the outbreak of series of fraudulent cash retrieval at ATM (automated teller's machine) areas in 2003, the Ministry of Finance required financial institutions to install image monitoring systems, creating NT$10 billion worth of business opportunities. In 2005, many government-run banks released orders for financial image-monitoring security systems. Two typical examples are the order worth NT$40 million placed by Bank of Taiwan with SECOM and the order worth NT$80 million placed by Land Bank of Taiwan with Shin Kong Security.
