The Economic Roundup is an excerpted translation of the Chinese-language ROC Economic Yearbook published by the Economic Daily News, a sister publication of the Taiwan Economic News. The yearbook is the most comprehensive and authoritative source for understanding the fundamentals of Taiwan's economy, both in the macro and micro aspects. The excerpted translation gives foreign readers a concise view of the island's overall economic picture. According to the statistics of the Government Information Office, the Executive Yuan, as of the end of 2005, there were 2,442 newspaper publishers, 4,825 magazine publishers, 8,357 book publishers, 1,108 news agencies, and 6,136 audio materials producers in Taiwan.

In the aspect of electronics media, there were 172 radio broadcasting stations in operation, five broadcast TV stations, 63 cable-TV system operators, 3,669 producers for radio broadcast programs, 3,893 producers for TV programs, 1,320 firms for the issuance of radio broadcast and TV programs, 3,846 firms fro radio broadcast and TV advertisements, 2,826 firms for video-recorded program tapes, 135 satellite radio broadcast and TV channels, 73 firms for the supply of satellite radio broadcast and TV programs, and eight direct TV firms. As of January 2006, the number of Internet subscribers in Taiwan topped 14.76 million, including 11.62 million broadband subscribers, for a penetration rate of 60%. In the future, the development of multiple on-line application software products and innovated services and contents, along with the emphasis on related Internet norms, rights, and obligations, will play a critical role in Taiwan's society and the development of Internet information/communications industry.

"The Law for the Organization of the National Communications Commission" was already enacted by the Legislative Yuan on October 25, 2005. According to article 3 of the law, the NCC is in charge of the supervision and transmission of communications and transmission, management, system equipment, engineering technical codes, and management of transmission resources. After its inauguration, the NCC should review as soon as possible laws and regulations of communications and transmission, such as the three radio broadcast and TV laws, namely Radio Broadcast and TV Law, Cable Radio Broadcast and TV Law, and Satellite Radio Broadcast and TV Law, so as to cope with the international digital trend.
