Pollution control is not only among the government-designated 10 newly emerging industries in Taiwan, but is also a key global development sector. Based on a forecast issued by EBI in 2003, the global pollution control market will amount to US$656 billion by the end of 2008. The pollution control industry comprises manufactures of environmental protection equipment, environmental protection engineering and technology consultants, and providers of waste water treatment and solid waste disposal services.
The island's pollution control industry generated production value of NT$125 billion in 2005, and the figure is expected to post a minimum 3% annual growth in the coming years. Last year, Taiwan exported some US$426 million worth of pollution control equipment, up 20.3% from 2004.
The local industry will focus its development on water purification, waste water drainage systems, resources re-utilization, and maintenance of environmental protection facilities.
Due to the growing public awareness of environmental protection and the required control over total emission of carbon dioxide, there will be considerable growth potential for the domestic pollution control market. But makers should work hard to introduce the latest technologies, reinforce their engineering capability, upgrade their R & D strength, and boost their marketing and after-sales service abilities, so as to stay competitive and secure sound business growth in the future. |
