Taiwan generated 189.66 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity in 2005, up 4.6% from 2004's 181.25 billion kilowatt-hours. The corresponding sales volume of 175.29 billion kilowatt-hours for last year showed an increase of 4.7% over 2004's 167.48 billion kilowatt-hours, and 11.497 million users also grew 2.0% from 11.274 million users.
In 2005, Taiwan Power Co. purchased 12.75 billion kilowatt-hours in electricity from private local operators of co-generators, accounting for 6.7% of the firm's total power generation and procurement volume.
After the Electricity Industry Law is ratified, the local electricity market will be open for free competition, which will constitute a major impact on TaiPower. In addition, in line with the implementation of the Kyodo Protocol calling for the reduced emission of CO2 to ward off the warm-house effect and protect the ozone layer, the Ministry of Economic Affairs is actively promoting the development of utilization of renewable energy resources, so as to effectively diversify the island's energy utilization, achieve the environmental protection and secure the domestic economic development. The Cabinet also approved the draft statute governing the development of renewable energy resources on June 8, 2005, effectively paving the way for the accelerated development of renewable energy products in Taiwan. |
