The Economic Roundup is an excerpted translation of the Chinese-language ROC Economic Yearbook published by the Economic Daily News, a sister publication of the Taiwan Economic News. The yearbook is the most comprehensive and authoritative source for understanding the fundamentals of Taiwan's economy, both in the macro and micro aspects. The excerpted translation gives foreign readers a concise view of the island's overall economic picture. It is divided into four parts: general economy, primary industries, secondary industries, and tertiary industries.

Secondary Industries > Public Natural Gas Business
Based on the statistics from the Association of Public Natural Gas, there were 2,517,619 clients for 25 domestic natural gas firms in Taiwan, consuming a total of 1.315 billion cubic meters of natural gas in 2005. Compared with 2004, the number of customers rose 3.12% and the amount of natural gas consumption surged 6.15%.

In recent years, advanced countries in the world have actively encouraged the use of natural gas in line with the Kyodo Protocol calling for reduced emission of CO2 to ward off the warm-house effect and protect the ozone layer. The government in Taiwan is also following suit, promoting the use of natural gas in office buildings, hospitals, gymnasiums and hotels for air conditioning and fueling to save consumption of electric power. It is also encouraging the development of steam/electricity co-generation.

In order to rationalize the natural gas price structure for users, the government will implement a new accounting system, under which users will be subject to a basic monthly charge plus the additional charge for their gas consumption.

The state-run Chinese Petroleum Corp. is now the major source for the supply of natural gas. The firm imports natural gas from a number of foreign countries such as Indonesia and Malaysia, in addition to a small portion of natural gas produced in Taiwan.
