The Economic Roundup is an excerpted translation of the Chinese-language ROC Economic Yearbook published by the Economic Daily News, a sister publication of the Taiwan Economic News. The yearbook is the most comprehensive and authoritative source for understanding the fundamentals of Taiwan's economy, both in the macro and micro aspects. The excerpted translation gives foreign readers a concise view of the island's overall economic picture. It is divided into four parts: general economy, primary industries, secondary industries, and tertiary industries.

 Secondary Industries > Precision Machines
Taiwan's machinery industry usually focus its research on the equipment directly applied to the production of various industries, including metal processing machines, industrial machines, special-purpose machines, electronics manufacturing equipment, general-use machines, conveying and automation equipment, metal molds and other machines, parts and accessories.

According to statistics compiled by the Taiwan Association of Machinery Industry, Taiwan's machinery production value rose 6.9% from a year earlier to reach NT$580 billion in 2005, with the growth rate lower than in the previous two years. The monthly output value of the local machinery industry hit a record high of NT$52.6 billion in December 2004, but has since plunged for several months, undermining the overall annual growth of the island's machinery production. The major reasons for the slowed growth included mainland China macro-adjustment policy, the continued rise in raw material prices, and lingering foreign exchange fluctuations.

In order to effectively promote the development of precision machines in Taiwan, the government should encourage the domestic national defense, manufacturing and processing industries to adopt more locally-made automated precision machines. This, in turn, will stimulate local makers of precision machines to step up R & D of new automated and precision machinery models to create another peak for Taiwan's precision machinery manufacturing industry.
