Taiwan's production value of bicycles reached NT$35.05 billion in 2005, up 21.4% from 2004, and that of bicycle parts and accessories surged 10% to NT$22.04 billion.
Last year, Taiwan exported 4.60 million bicycles, up 5.84% from 2004's 4.34 million units. The export value came to US$918 million, showing a record-high annual growth of 27.47%.
Last year, the Ministry of Economic Affairs set up a task force to monitor Taiwan's bicycle exports to the European Union, and makers set off to develop Taiwan into an island for the production of light-weight bikes. Imports of bicycles from mainland China posted an annual rise of 28% in 2005. |
