The Economic Roundup is an excerpted translation of the Chinese-language ROC Economic Yearbook published by the Economic Daily News, a sister publication of the Taiwan Economic News. The yearbook is the most comprehensive and authoritative source for understanding the fundamentals of Taiwan's economy, both in the macro and micro aspects. The excerpted translation gives foreign readers a concise view of the island's overall economic picture. It is divided into four parts: general economy, primary industries, secondary industries, and tertiary industries.

 Secondary Industries > Passive Devices
The top three product items of passive devices in terms of production volume and value are resistors, capacitors and inductors. According to statistics compiled by the IT IS, Taiwan's production value of passive devices posted an annual growth of 4% to reach NT$106.9 billion in 2005, with that of resistors increasing 4%, capacitors 3% and inductors 7%.

Last year, the global market for passive devices reached US$27 billion, up 3% from 2004, and the global sales of resistors grew 2%, capacitors 2% and inductors 5%. Accordingly, Taiwan's overall sales performance for passive devices was better than the global average in 2005.

At the moment, Taiwanese makers in the line maintain a certain production scale for each of the three major passive devices. Looking to the future, the sales growth of the island's passive-device industry is expected to improve further in 2006 from 2005 due mainly to continued tight supply and strong market demand.
