The Economic Roundup is an excerpted translation of the Chinese-language ROC Economic Yearbook published by the Economic Daily News, a sister publication of the Taiwan Economic News. The yearbook is the most comprehensive and authoritative source for understanding the fundamentals of Taiwan's economy, both in the macro and micro aspects. The excerpted translation gives foreign readers a concise view of the island's overall economic picture. It is divided into four parts: general economy, primary industries, secondary industries, and tertiary industries.

 Secondary Industries > Semiconductors
Due to significant depletion of inventories in the second half of 2005, the global semiconductor industry managed to post a single-digit sales growth last year. In Taiwan alone, the IC industry still maintained the NT$1 trillion mark in annual production value for 2005, almost unchanged from the 2004 level.

After enjoying 30 years of booming development, Taiwan's IC industry is facing such changes as the quick turnover rate for electronics products, the rising of the emerging markets, and constant technical innovations, which are poised to affect the development of the local IC and semiconductor industries at home and abroad.
