The Economic Roundup is an excerpted translation of the Chinese-language ROC Economic Yearbook published by the Economic Daily News, a sister publication of the Taiwan Economic News. The yearbook is the most comprehensive and authoritative source for understanding the fundamentals of Taiwan's economy, both in the macro and micro aspects. The excerpted translation gives foreign readers a concise view of the island's overall economic picture. It is divided into four parts: general economy, primary industries, secondary industries, and tertiary industries.

 Secondary Industries > Communications Equipment
The production value of Taiwan's communications equipment industry amounted to NT$493.2 billion in 2005, showing a sharp growth of 23.2% from 2004. Of the total output value, wireless telecommunications equipment accounted for 66% and broadband network equipment 34%. The top five items are mobile phones, wireless local area network, global positioning system, DSL modem, and SOHO Router.

Mobile phones have been Taiwan's largest category of telecommunications equipment, and new-generation models usually incorporate the network and multimedia applications. Taiwan's production volume of mobile phones hit a record high of 80 million units in 2005, accounting for 32% of the island's total output of telecommunications equipment. In addition, the production of such key parts as chips, screens and batteries is also in full swing in Taiwan, making local cell phone makers very competitive in production.

GPS and cable modem were the two telecommunications products with the highest annual sales growth of over 50% in 2005, due to the increased market demand for car-use GPS products and strong demand for the combination of cable modems and VoIP products in the U.S. and Europe.
