The Economic Roundup is an excerpted translation of the Chinese-language ROC Economic Yearbook published by the Economic Daily News, a sister publication of the Taiwan Economic News. The yearbook is the most comprehensive and authoritative source for understanding the fundamentals of Taiwan's economy, both in the macro and micro aspects. The excerpted translation gives foreign readers a concise view of the island's overall economic picture. It is divided into four parts: general economy, primary industries, secondary industries, and tertiary industries.

 Secondary Industries > Rubber Products
Boasting such characteristics as abrasion-resistance, heat-resistance, water-proof, and insulation, rubber products are widely applied to the daily necessities, national defense, auto and electronics industries. The rubber product manufacturing industry is indispensable to the development of other industries, although it commands only a slight portion of the entire manufacturing sector.

The production value of Taiwan's rubber industry broke the NT$70 billion mark for the first time to hit a record high of NT$78.2 billion in 2004, compared with an average of some NT$60 billion-65 billion in the past 10 years. But the output value inched down 1.55% from a year earlier to NT$77 billion in 2005 due to the raw materials lingering at high levels.

In terms of exports, high value-added products such as auto tires have replaced low-price ones such as motorbike and bicycle tubes as major outbound product category. This indicated that the mass exodus of local rubber products makers to mainland China hasn't caused the local industry to hollow out.

In order to stay competitive in the world market, local makers in the line should keep upgrading their rubber processing technologies, tap more overseas markets and develop new applications of rubber products.
