The Economic Roundup is an excerpted translation of the Chinese-language ROC Economic Yearbook published by the Economic Daily News, a sister publication of the Taiwan Economic News. The yearbook is the most comprehensive and authoritative source for understanding the fundamentals of Taiwan's economy, both in the macro and micro aspects. The excerpted translation gives foreign readers a concise view of the island's overall economic picture. It is divided into four parts: general economy, primary industries, secondary industries, and tertiary industries.

 Secondary Industries > Feed Industry
Taiwan's production value of feed products totaled NT$48.58 billion in 2005, down 6.1% from 2004. The drop mainly resulted from the impact of opening the domestic livestock market following Taiwan's entry into the World Trade Organization (WTO). To counter, quite a few leading bulk commodity firms have worked hard to integrate their production lines or diversify their operations, including Charoen Pokphand Enterprises (Taiwan) and Great Wall Enterprise Co.

In addition, some firms are actively engaged in e-commerce by developing B2B trading model besides traditional transaction and some are developing feed products with higher added value or actively involved in the biotechnology industry.

The Cabinet has announced that mainland China's feed products can enter the Taiwan market, allowing such mainland feed products as corn and soybean powder into the local market on a case-by-case basis by the end of January 2004.

Although business operations of the island's bulk commodity firms improved a little in 2005, the overall environment for their operations has failed to improve for a long time, forcing makers in the line to seek breakthroughs in operations. Great Wall, for instance, has gradually shifted its business forces to sales and production of chicken and pork products in mainland China, while Charoen Pokphand has moved to intensify its sales of chicken products in the domestic market by setting up specialized chicken sales stores around the island.
