The Economic Roundup is an excerpted translation of the Chinese-language ROC Economic Yearbook published by the Economic Daily News, a sister publication of the Taiwan Economic News. The yearbook is the most comprehensive and authoritative source for understanding the fundamentals of Taiwan's economy, both in the macro and micro aspects.  Primary Industries > Forestry And Water Conservation
Forestry is the most important ecological system on the land areas of the Earth, providing recyclable resources for creatures and water conservation resources and serving as the basis for environmental protection and scientific education.

Taiwan's forestry coverage area reaches 2,102,400 hectares, with total timber output capacity of 247,452,678 cubic meters in 2004, timber production of 70,801.28 cubic meters, and 40,040.71 cubic meters of processed timber products, valued at NT$123,023,919.

In 2005, timber production declined to 65,233.43 cubic meters, but processed timber products rose to 59,838.13 cubic meters, valued at NT$435,982,025. Meanwhile, there were a total of 31,913,573 kilograms in timber by-products, valued at NT$435,982,025. The Forestry Bureau under the Cabinet-level Council of Agriculture raked in total income of NT$50,153,467 from forestry recreational establishments.

Water and soil conservation is essential to environmental protection and sustained agricultural protection, the government will move to set up an anti-damage system for slopping land, accelerate forestry plantation, and develop versatile conservation and environmental functions of forestry.
