Taipei, Aug. 18, 2005 (CENS)-Taiwan's radio-frequency identification (RFID) industry will likely turn out a revenue totaling NT$70 billion (US$2.2 billion at US$1:NT$31) in 2013, representing around 10% of the world's total, according to the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA).

The ministry set the guidance recently at a Strategic Review Board (SRB) meeting, which is organized by the Executive Yuan's Science and Technology Advisory Group. The group's meeting outcomes usually turn into the government's policies.

The ministry pointed out that the government would enact development strategy for the island's RFID industry and compete for the chances to join world efforts in drawing up international standards for the industry. It added that RFID development would be crucial to daily life of Taiwanese people, the island's economic and business development and its industry's competitiveness in the future.

An official of the group pointed out that the island's RFID-application development was apparently lagging as compared with its remarkable developments in electronics commerce and electronics supply chains although local suppliers used to apply the wireless identification technology to car's burglarproof system, mass rapid transportation ticket cards and door security systems as well as got involved in development of ultra high frequency products in 2003.

The official added that a viable strategy for future development of Taiwan's RFID industry is that the island must join international efforts in drawing up standards for the technology and integrated the technology with five segments, which include residence and public security, passageway security, and aviation security.

The advisory group stressed that the government planned to develop RFID core technology and establish RFID test environment.
