Taipei, May 26, 2004 (CENS)--Taiwan Electrical and Electronics Manufacturers' Association (TEEMA) elected S.S. Hsu its chairman and M.H Hung and Y.J. Jiao its vice chairmen in a recent reelection.

The association now represents over 4,000 of Taiwan's electrical and electronics manufacturers including heavyweight players such as Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC). Last year alone, the association's members generated total production value of US$136.6 billion, representing around half of the total output value recorded by Taiwan's manufacturing sector.

Hsu is concurrently chairman of Compal Electronics Group while Hung and Jiao are chairmen of Matsushita Electric Taiwan and Winbond Electronics Corp., respectively.

The association reelected its directors and supervisors on May 24 and the elected 27 directors and nine supervisors elected Hsu chairman and Hung and Jiao vice chairmen. It was the association's 20th election.

In this election, one fifth of the total directors and supervisors were new faces. Hsu pointed out that this election signified the association's reform emphasizing replacements for senior members with young members.

Chairman K.Y. Yieh of the Inventec Group, Chairman S.M. Lin of the Wistron Group, Chairman K.Y. Sung of the Lite-On Group, Chairman M.H. Huang of the TECO Group and Vice Chairman D.T. Sun of the Pacific Electric Wire & Cable Group left the director board in this election. The vacancies they left were filled by Winbond's Jiao, president S.T. Lee of Inventec Group, Chairman Y.R. Hsu of Shihlin Electric & Engineering Corp., President H.H. Wu of Universal Scientific Industrial Co., Ltd., and Chairman T.C. Kuo of Cheng Uei Precision Industry Co., Ltd.

The re-elected Hsu pointed out that the association would partly restructure its 33 committees by closing resistor and electrolytic capacitor committees while opening nanometer-technology and micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) committees in line with industry shifts.

For the first time, the association installed vice chairmanships as a mechanism for cultivating successors of the chairman, according to Hsu.

Hsu said he would push a plan to streamline the transportation between the two sides of the Taiwan Straits as the three direct linkages are unlikely to be carried out for the time being. He stressed that the association would serve as a bridge between the two sides of the straits as enacted in a recent legislature, which empowers some associations to deal with the mainland authorities over some affairs for the government here.

For example, the association, he noted, can negotiate with the mainland authorities over the establishments of common industry standards under Taiwan government's authorizations.

Hsu also suggested the two sides of the straits should hold talks over tax and investment agreements as soon as possible to secure the benefits of Taiwanese enterprises operating in the two sides.
