Taiwan to upgrade 12 service industries

Taipei, June 18, 2004 (CENS)--The Cabinet-level Council For Economic Planning and Development yesterday decided to foster 12 service industries as part of its plan to transform Taiwan's industrial structure after an intra-government meeting.

The 12 service industries include financial service, logistics and transportation service, communications and media service, tourism and leisure service, cultural innovation service, design service, information service, R&D service, environmental service and engineering service.

Government officials and specialists attending the meeting drew up flagship plans and implementation measures for the industries. The plans and measures are primarily associated with talent cultivation, regulation mitigation, capital accommodation and internalization.

For financial service, the council said the measures will focus on inspection reinforcement, efficient treatment of bad loans as well as insurance and bond market perfecting. The development of the service will match with the island's plan to develop itself into a regional financial center.

For logistics and transportation service, the themes will center on custom declaration, trade sale, transportation contracts, storage and distribution.

The meeting determined broadband service as the development priority of the island's communications and media service.

The development plan for the island's tourism and leisure service, the development plan will concentrate on trade fairs and conferences as well as leisure services.

For cultural innovation service, its flagship plan will zero in on digital entertainment, music, art performances and publishing services.

The plan for design service will target industrial designs, computer aided designs, package design and web page design.

With regard to information service, the plan will focus on enterprise applications, information security, electronics commerce and on-line gaming.

As for R&D service, the plan will center on intelligent property management, industry analysis, technique forecast, investments, evaluation as well as research and development.

For environmental service, the plan will concentrate on resource recycling; and the engineering service will zero in on network management system for enterprises.
