DRAMeXchange: Ultrabook PC to Command 10% Share of Global PC Market in 2012

2011/09/15 | By Steve Chuang

Taipei, Sept. 15, 2011 (CENS)--Many market researchers have dissented from Intel's optimism about the market prospects for Ultrabook PCs, which the company thinks will contribute 40% to global PC sales in 2012, with one of them, DRAMeXchange, predicting such devices to command only a 10% share in the year.

Perhaps inspired by Apple Inc.'s dominance in the PCD industry now, DRAMeXchange forecast that the penetration rate of Ultrabook PC, which will reach only around 2% this year, is not likely to hit 40% until in 2015.

However, the market researcher opines that Ultrabook PC still has lots to love: featuring lighter weight, skinner design, better performance and longer battery service life than traditional notebook PCs, as well as selling for higher unit prices to guarantee the profitability.

Therefore, such next-generation laptops are likely to revive the growth of the global PC industry in the future, especially when more PC brands have ventured into development to inaugurate an Ultrabook trend. Varieties of Ultrabook PC models brought by Asus, Acer, Toshiba and Lenovo will be launched starting at the end of September, and then will heavily hit the PC market next spring.

DRAMeXchange added that the trend will also benefit manufacturers of related parts and components, including SSDs (solid state drives), power-efficiency memory modules, battery packs, LED-backlit modules and open cell panels, in the short term.

For example, the institute noted, as Ultrabook PC has higher system power consumption of between 40W and 60W than tablet PCs, the device's battery module that inevitably calls for more lithium polymer cells will be produced at a 60-70% higher cost than a tablet PC battery module. This will help battery module makers to drive up their sales figures and profits.
