Chunghwa Picture Tube's Touch-Screen Venture Lands Contracts

2010/09/01 | By Ken Liu

Taipei, Sep. 1, 2010 (CENS)--Chunghwa Picture Tube Co., Ltd. has recently won contracts from undisclosed international big-name suppliers of touch screens for sensors since it retooled 70% of the capacity at a 4.5-generation LCD-panel factory for sensor production in the first half of this year.

In light of weak demand for small-sized panels from information-technology manufacturers, Chunghwa has decided to shift the panel factory to production of sensors for touch screens.

Industry executives pointed out that production of the sensors is less expensive than that of the panel in terms of cost as panel production requires inventory backlogs of raw materials and components whereas sensor production does not.

Chunghwa Picture Tube executives pointed out that the 4.5-generation factory will boost output to three million sensors a month in the second half this year, up from the current monthly production of two million sensors. The company is considering shifting another factory to the production.
