MITRE Corp. of U.S. ties up with ITRI for cooperation

Taipei, Feb. 28, 2003 (CENS)--MITRE Corp. of the United States plans to establish an Asia-Pacific research and development center in Taiwan. It has cemented an agreement with the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) for close cooperation.

The government-funded ITRI will provide assistance to MITRE Corp. for the establishment of its R&D center for the Asia-Pacific region. The two partners will also jointly develop the new generation of avionics technology and equipment as well as other products in the future.

MITRE Corp. is a not-for-profit organization transformed from a former research unit at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). It provides systems engineering and information technology (IT) support to U.S. government agencies. The company also operates federal funded R&D centers for the U.S. Department of Defense, the Federal Aviation Administration, and the Internal Revenue Service.

The fields of technical know-how MITRE Corp. is specialized include aviation and aeronautics, electronics, global positioning systems, collaborative technologies, human language technology, sensors and environment, information security, and knowledge management.

MITRE Corp. also offers assistance concerning CNS/ATM (communications, navigation, surveillance/air traffic management). It helped Taiwan's Civil Aeronautics Administration set up the advanced CNS/ATM system in 1998 to improve flight security and air traffic safety in the Taiwan area.
