Established in 1995, Sunny Lighting & Electrical Co. is a Taiwan-invested, mainland China-based lighting manufacturer specializing in the making of halogen bulbs on an OEM (original equipment manufacturer) basis for export.

According to company founder and chairman Kenny Ho, mainland China's halogen-lamp industry has rapidly matured since the 1980s and is today highly competitive in the global market, both in terms of product pricing and quality. "We have to keep streamlining our operations and upgrading the quality of our products to keep our edge in the market," he says.

Sunny makes its lamps at a plant in Foshan, Guangdong province. The company has its own R&D team to develop new and better-quality halogen lamps to meet evolving market needs. "To guarantee the quality of our products, we have hired experienced veterans from the lighting industry and strictly controlled manufacturing processes," Ho says. "Most of the materials used in our halogen bulbs are sourced locally from carefully screened suppliers."

"We export halogen bulbs on an OEM basis to our clients in Europe, mainly Germany, the United Kingdom and Belgium," Ho says. "Currently we have workforce of about 1,000 persons turning out around four to five million halogen bulbs per month. Our MR16, GU10, G4, and G9 models are especially popular."

Ho says that the key to Sunny's consistently high quality and low prices is the company's corps of highly skilled workers and its advanced production and quality-control equipment. "We are always working to improve efficiency and lower costs," he says.

In the quest to keep costs low, Ho concedes that his company has faced several challenges in recent years, most notably in the forms of higher oil and raw-material costs. These pressures, he says, have forced the company to cut out operational and material waste wherever possible.

To diversify into new markets, Ho decided to develop LED lamps this year and focus on high-end and high-voltage LED lamps for household use. "LED lamps are sure to be the stars of tomorrow's lighting industry," he states.

"In the increasingly competitive lighting industry, survival depends on keeping pace with global trends," Ho says. "Although our involvement in the LED market has forced us to overhaul our manufacturing structure, it will also create new market niches for our company."
