TSMC and MediaTek to Top Global Competitors in 2014 Revenue Growths
2014/11/20 | By Ken LiuAccording to market consultant IC Insights, foundry giant Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) and fabless chipmaker MediaTek Inc. will outdo the other globally top-20 semiconductor companies in 2014 revenue growth.
IC Insights estimates TSMC, pure silicon foundry, to see 2014 revenue rise 26% year on year, far leading Samsung’s 8% and Intel’s 6%. MediaTek is projected to post 25% more revenue this year over last year, compared with 11% increase at Qualcomm Inc., a major vendor of wireless chips globally.
Another notable development of the top-20 rankings: GlobalFoundries Inc. is likely to drop out of the rankings this year to stand behind United Microelectronics Corp. (UMC), which will retake world No.2 foundry title from GlobaFoundries and hold No. 19 on the rankings with revenue rising 9% year-on-year to US$4.3 billion.
IC Insights projects the world’s top-20 chip companies to have total revenue of US$259.5 billion by the end of this year, up 9% from last year, or up 8% YoY even excluding the US$230.1 billion in revenue of TSMC and UMC.
TSMC is estimated to have revenue of US$25 billion throughout 2014 due mainly to having gained all the contracts for 20nm foundry service on the market, including the contracts to make Apple A8/A8X processors.
MediaTek is projected to post revenue of US$7.1 billion by the end of this year due to its acquisition of MStar Semiconductor, Inc. and sizably increased share in China’s 4G handset chip market.
Benefiting from steep markups of DRAM on the market, Micron Technology Inc., and SK Hynix Inc. are estimated to see revenue grow at better-than-expected rate this year. Micron is forecast to see revenue rise 16% year-on-year, to US$16.6 billion this year, becoming the world’s No.5 memory chipmaker. SK Hynix is likely to have revenue of US$15.8 billion this year, soaring 22% from last year to remain the No.6 maker. (KL)
