Lenovo Targets Ambitious Laptop PC Shipments

2014/10/20 | By Ken Liu

The Lenovo Group Ltd. plans to ship 31.3 million, 34.4 million and 37 million laptop PCs in 2014, 2015, and 2016, respectively, in a bid to solidify its global position in the field, according to its Taiwanese contract suppliers.

In 2013 the China-based Lenovo shipped around 31.5 million laptops, but forecasts slightly lower 2014 goal due to continued market slowdown this year.

The ThinkPad-branded and  Lenovo-branded models will account for 6.7 million systems and 8.3 million systems of the company's laptop shipments this year, with both to account in 2015 and 2016 for 20 million.

The ambitious goals would boost the output at LCFC Electronics Technology Co., Ltd., a joint venture of Lenovo and Taiwan's Compal Electronics Inc., to around 15 million and 20 million systems this and next year, respectively.

LCFC began volume production in 2012, shipping only 560,000 systems in the first year and 6.4 million in the following year.

The joint venture has around 10,000 workers, turning out one million laptops a month to account for 39% of Lenovo's total output. Since Lenovo plans half its output by the joint venture whose capacity has been strained, industry executives estimate LCFC to boost output to 1.5 million a month in H2, 2014.

Industry executives say although Lenovo is developing strong presence in the smartphone and network service markets, the company maintains ambitions in the laptop business. (KL)
