Asustek's Consolidated Revenue in August Hit 8-month High of NT$42.164 Bn.

2014/09/19 | By Steve Chuang

Mostly driven by recovering global market demand for notebook PCs, Asustek Computer Inc., a globally top-5 branded PC supplier, saw consolidated revenue in August hit an 8-month high of NT$42.164 billion (US$1.405 billion), a 4.91% increase compared to July and 3.1% growth over last August, according to the firm's latest financial report.

Asustek attributes the banner performance to its strong laptop shipments, which rose 15%-plus over July mainly on strong back-to-school demand in Asia Pacific and West Europe, albeit having also posted steadily declining  tablet shipments.

Asustek's laptop shipments have turned around to drive its overall performance recently.

For the first eight months of this year, the firm's cumulative consolidated revenue totaled NT$297.887 billion (US$9.929 billion), up 2.56% year-on-year.

In response to the increasingly stabilized global market for PCs, Asustek has added new models to its lineup to offer a wider range of laptops with unit prices ranging from US$199 to US$1,499. Meanwhile, the firm's newest netbook model, EeeBook X205, is also scheduled for launch before the Christmas  season.

Additional good news for Asustek is that its smartphone sales in August neared 1 million units, giving institutional investors good reason to believe the firm's smartphone business has turned profitable in the month, earlier than expected. To further fuel growth, the company has been accepting preorders for its 4.5-inch, customized models of Zenfone smartphones in India, where to date its 16GB Zenfone 6, and 8GB, black and red Zenfone 5 all have been sold out on Flipkart, the nations's largest online retailer.

Asustek has also witnessed its smartphone sales in Southeast Asia steadily increase, looking to  ambitiously boost its single-month shipments in Indonesia, Vietnam, Malaysia and Thailand to 700,000 units overall, to drive its share of the regional market from 7% in August to 10% in September.

As for the Chinese market, the firm has stepped up  R&D for its customized model of Zenfone 4G, scheduled for launch along with Chinese telecoms prior to the upcoming China National Day holidays beginning October 1.

With new products continually launched, institutional investors generally forecast Asustek's smartphone and laptop businesses  to be more profitable in Q4 of this year. (SC)
