Taiwan's Exports up for 6th Straight Month in July

2014/08/26 | By Judy Li

Taiwan's exports showed the sixth consecutive monthly growth of 5.8% to US$26.77 billion in July, the second highest for the month on record, with imports up 9.5%, according to the statistics released by the Ministry of Finance (MOF).

M.T. Yeh, director general at Department of Statistics of MOF, indicates that the export value in July is still a little lower than the earlier prediction for the month at US$27 billion. Nevertheless, Yeh says, if the monthly export value in Q3 reaches US$26.67 billion, then the export growth of the quarter will exceed 5% to meet the forecast by the Directorate General of Budget, Accounting & Statistics (DGBAS).

In July the exports of electronic products totaled US$8.48 billion for a sharp annual growth of 16.7%. Of which, the exports of ICs took the lion's share of US$6.22 billion, surging 20.4% YoY, both the highest of their kinds.

However, the export value of ICT (information communication technology) products in the same month experienced the ninth straight monthly fall to only US$920 million, tumbling 25.8% from a year earlier to be a new monthly low since October 2009 if excluding the months with long Chinese New Year holidays.

Among the ICT products, the export value of mobile phones suffered a whopping annual drop of 65.4% to US$183 million due mainly to poor sales of Taiwan's leading mobile phone makers, particularly HTC Corp. (JL)
