Uni-Opto Technology Projects Higher Q3 Revenue

2014/08/08 | By Ken Liu

With strong market for LED light bulbs and LED backlights for TVs and mobile phones, Taiwan's LED maker Uni-Opto Technology Co., Ltd. projects Q3 revenue to rise at least 30% from a quarter earlier, with July revenue  likely to exceed NT$800 million (US$26.6 million).

The company has begun delivering orders from Europe for LED light bulbs this July, which will help boost its total shipment of the bulbs for this year to 20 million units, nearly triple the number of last year.

According to company chairman, Alpha Wu, business outlook for the company is quite good in H2 of this year, with sales of handset backlights and TV backlights predicted to rise 40-50%, respectively.

He added that its light-bulb shipment would increase to 2.5 million units in July alone, for the lead-frame maker I-Chuin Precision Industry Co., Ltd. will adopt the bulbs in its lineup.

Uni-Opto spokesman, T.C. Weng, noted that the new bulbs all meet the stricter version of the U.S. Energy Star for omni-directional LED light bulbs, to take effect in Q3.

Weng said the company had invested NT$1.2 billion (US$41 million) to boost production capacity of LED lighting fixtures in light of swarming orders from Europe and America and in anticipation of robust demand worldwide in H2 of this year, adding that the company had branched out into lighting-fixture manufacturing from LED packaging in line with the policy to fully make lighting fixtures in Taiwan.

The company will triple output of the lighting fixtures, including light bulbs and light tubes, to three million units monthly by the end of Q3, at which time lighting products will account for 30% of its total revenue.

The company had Q2 revenue of around NT$2 billion (US$68.3 million), up 7% from the previous quarter due to new product launches. (KL)
