Taiwan and China Energy Executives Explore Investment Opportunities in the U.K.

2014/07/14 | By Ken Liu

According to China News Service (CNS),  China's second-largest government-run media, executives from around 20 energy companies in Taiwan and China jointly visited the U.K. for five days in late June to study investment opportunities in new energy technologies.

The executives were invited by the First Minister of Scotland Alexander Elliot Anderson Salmond and organized by the Cross Strait China Culture Communication Foundation and the Overseas Chinese Energy Association.

The executives represented organizations including China National Offshore Oil Corp., a top-3 oil producer in China; the Taiwan Merger & Acquisition and Private Equity Council; and Strong Petrochemicals Holdings Ltd. of Hong Kong.

Huang Chi-yuan, founder of the council, says the trip is the first to explore new energy investment in England that is co-organized by energy enterprises in Taiwan and China.

Long Kun-ling, secretary general of the foundation, says that Scotland is a world leader in renewable and green energy technologies and is ready to work with Taiwan and China on fields as supply chain, safety, health and training.

Long says that China and Taiwan need to explore energy options overseas for bilateral economic development has been restricted by energy shortages; while energy companies on both sides can work together to tap the international market.

The exploratory trip was conceived in October 2013 during a roundtable meeting in Hong Kong addressing overseas cooperation between Taiwan and China, where the attendees discussed issues including working together to tap the international market and resources.

An entrepreneurial meeting held in November 2013 in Nanjing, China addressed bilateral cooperation on energy issues.

Scottish Development International held three forums for 20-plus Taiwanese manufacturers and visitors, who also met with energy companies in London and Manchester later. (KL)
