Taiwan Joins Meeting of APEC Ministers Responsible for Mining

2014/07/10 | By Steve Chuang

To enhance exchange and cooperation between the mining industries of APEC (Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation) member nations, Taiwan sent a delegation of officials and industry representatives led by Vice Minister of Economic Affairs Woody Duh to the 5th Meeting of APEC Ministers Responsible for Mining held June 27-28 in Beijing.

This year's meeting focused on the enhancement of cooperation among countries across the APEC bloc, innovation-driven growth, and social responsibility and common development.

At the meeting, Taiwanese officers supported the idea of APEC economies working together to promote innovation, advanced technology, and mineral exploration and development, with the aim of boosting the value and profits of mining industries.

In addition to officials from the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Bureau of Mines, Taiwan's delegation also included directors from the state-owned CPC Corp., Taiwan, a petroleum, natural gas, and gasoline company; and the Taiwan Power Company, a state-run electric power utility, who represented the island's mining industry in discussions on crude oil, coal, and other mineral resource issues during the two-day meeting.

The Taiwan delegation took advantage of the meeting to engage in bilateral talks and exchanges of views with representatives from the Philippines and Peru, which will host APEC 2015 and 2016, respectively. This will help to increase the island's presence at the annual APEC conference. (SC)
