Taiwanese LED Exhibitors Promote New Products at Guangzhou Lighting Show

2014/06/13 | By Ken Liu

Taiwan's LED makers promoted new products at the Guangzhou International Lighting Exhibition 2014, which runs June 9-12.

A seventh-time exhibitor at the show, Everlight Electronics Co., Ltd., currently the world's No.1 LED packager by production capacity, promoted the LED headlamp modules that it co-developed with auto lamp maker Just Auto Lighting Technology Co., Ltd. The Argus-branded modules boast high efficiency and illumination uniformity.

Industry executives point out that Everlight has shown ambition to tap the auto lamp market since the beginning of this year, having secured orders from European and Japanese carmakers and vigorously developing presence in China's auto lamp market.

Everlight projects sales of auto lamp LEDs to double to account for 10% of its revenue this year. The company had revenue of NT$2.6 billion (US$86.6 million) in May, surging 21.27% year on year to mark a new high in two consecutive months.

Chipmakers Epistar Corp. and Genesis Photonics Inc. both exhibited the flip chips that use technologies that make the chips less expensive. Epistar executives point out that many of the company's customers have adopted the chips to generate fatter profit. Genesis Photonics executives say the company has released full specifications of over-drive chips and flip chips.

Genesis Photonics executives estimate the company's revenue for this May to top NT$400 million (US$13.3 million), a 3-year high. They expect the company's production to run at over 90% throughout the second quarter mostly thanks to rollouts of new products, which are estimated to enhance the company's profitability and improve product mixes.

Genesis is shifting product mixes by stressing commercial lighting and outdoor lighting LEDs in its lighting category, flash LED in mobile phone backlight, and direct backlight LEDs in TV backlight.

Lextar Electronics Corp. displayed chip-on-board (COB) packages featuring CRI 90, LM-80 quality, and hot color targeting technology. Also, the company debuted its Nimbus-P family of Flip Chip COB packages, which has better over-drive capability and reliability than usual types thanks to the high-performance ceramic substrate it uses. Nimbus-P packages are ideal for lighting applications that require narrow light diffusion angle, such as PAR lights and track lights thanks to 50% smaller light emitting area. The company plan to begin volume production of Nimbus-P in the third quarter this year.

The Guangzhou lighting fair is estimated to draw over 110,000 visitors and buyers. (KL)
