2014/04/21 | By Quincy Liang

AU Optronics Corp. (AUO), a top-two maker of thin film transistor-liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD) panels in Taiwan, recently unveiled new products made with global-leading technologies, including a full series of 42- to 65-inch 4K, or UHD (Ultra High Definition), curved LCD TV panels with wide color gamut. The debut gives the company the jump on the industry in mass-producing the advanced displays.

At the China Information Technology Expo & China Optoelectronics Display Expo 2014 (CITE & CODE 2014) held in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province of China from April 10 to 12, the Taiwanese panel supplier announced that it would highlight the theme, "Experience the Ultimate with Curved Ultra High Definition" at its show exhibit. In addition to 4K curved TV displays, the company showcased its latest curved monitor displays, and ultra high-resolution smartphone displays. AUO claimed that it aims to satisfy consumers' diverse needs for visual enjoyment with its ultra high resolution and complete product lines.

In terms of mobile device applications, AUO's exhibition highlights include a 6-inch WQHD (2560×1440 pixel-resolution) ultra-high resolution smartphone panel, the world's highest resolution 5.7-inch WQHD (2560×1440) double-emission active matrix organic light-emit diode (AMOLED) panel, ultra slim 5-inch HD720 in-cell touch AMOLED panel, 12.3-inch AHVA (Advanced Hyper-Viewing Angle) LCD panel, which is currently the largest in size and highest in resolution for dashboards, and oTP (On-cell Touch Panel) integrated touch solutions.

Ahead of the Industry

AUO pointed out that its 42- to 65-inch 4K curved TV displays have UHD 4K (3840x2160) ultra-high resolution, curved design, wide color gamut technology of over 100% NTSC National Television System Committee (NTSC) color saturation, and super narrow bezel. The curved design fits the viewing habits of human eyes, creating a concave screen that offers a wider viewing angle and immersive viewing experience. The lifelike and near-panoramic images make viewers feel as if they were actually in the scenes. The curved screen shows obvious contrast next to its conventional counterparts in its design, accentuating its differentiated feature.

In the professional monitor display segment, AUO debuted 27- and 32-inch curved LCD panels featuring high contrast, wide viewing angle AUO Advanced multi-domain vertical alignment (AMVA) technology, and super-narrow bezel design. Supporting high color saturation of 100% sRGB, the panels have vivid image colors and crisp images. The displays are designed for professional graphics, image processing, medical, audio-video gaming and industrial purposes.

AUO outpaced global counterparts in releasing the world's highest resolution 5.7-inch WQHD AMOLED panel for smartphone with resolutions up to 2560×1440 and 513 ppi (pixels per inch) to deliver brilliant images that are extremely sharp and detailed. The firm's ultra slim 5-inch HD720 in-cell touch AMOLED panel is only 0.57mm thick. AUO said that it used a special driver design to increase touch sensitivity and as a result can support 10 touch points. In responding to the latest trends in wearable devices, AUO adapted the AMOLED's slim, high contrast and power-saving features to a 1.6-inch wearable AMOLED panel for smart watches, meeting a consumer need for wearable displays that can be used for long periods and in outdoor environments.

Car Displays

Another major product category exhibited by AUO is automotive-application panels. The company has long been developing car displays for smart cars. At the exhibition, AUO introduced a 12.3-inch AHVA (Advanced Hyper-Viewing Angle) LCD panel for dashboards. The panel is currently the largest and highest resolution display of its class., with a resolution of 1920x720, high color saturation, high brightness and fast response time under low temperatures. The panel can function stably and show clear and complete information to the drivers even under sever weather conditions, ranging from scorching deserts to snow-covered terrain at minus 30 degrees centigrade. The 7-inch AHVA panel has a wide viewing angle, high brightness and high tolerance to temperature and uses AUO's full lamination technology for car displays to achieve low reflection, providing clear images for drivers and passengers even under intense light.
