Taiwan's domestic banks scored combined pre-tax profits of NT$258.214 billion (US$8.607 billion) in 2013, another record high,  and the per-employee contribution averaged at NT$1.6286 million (US$54,286.7), down  NT$35,400 (US$1,180) from NT$1.664 million (US$55,467) in the first three quarters of the year, according to the statistics released by the central bank.

A senior official of the central bank indicates that the per-employee contribution was only NT$529,200 (US$17,640) in 2009 shortly after the global financial tsunami, which surged five years later to NT$1.6286 million (US$54,286.7) by 2013.

Last year King's Town Bank, a local bank in southern Taiwan, ranked No. 1 with NT$5.4567 million (US$181,890) in per-employee contribution, followed by Shanghai Commercial & Savings Bank (SCSB) and Mega International Commercial Bank with NT$4.7875 million (US$159,583.3) and NT$4.0766 million (US$135,886.7), respectively.

SCSB and Mega both posted good performance in overseas operations that generate about 60% of their total profits, contrasting the corresponding percentage of E. Sun Bank and First Bank of 40%, and Hua Nan Bank and Chang Hwa Bank of 30%. (JL)
