LED Next Stage 2014 in Tokyo is a 7-in-1 Event

2014/03/06 | By Ken Liu

The LED Next Stage 2014 of Tokyo, Japan, is estimated to draw around 60,000 visitors and over 300 exhibitors during the four-day run beginning March 4.

Approximately 20 Taiwanese manufacturers have signed up for the show with the exhibitor delegation co-organized by China Economic News Service (CENS), the Taiwan Lighting Fixture Export Association (TLFEA), and the Taiwan Electrical & Electronics Manufacturers' Association (TEEMA).

A biennial LED lighting trade show, the 2012 event was attended by 314 exhibitors occupying 668 booths and 69,191 visitors.

This show specifically features light-source applications, differing from other LED shows. Organizers Nikkei Inc. and Japan LED Association  jointly debuted this show in 2008 in a bid to offer LED manufacturers another platform outside the established Tokyo Lighting Fair.

This year, the showground is divided into general lighting zone; OLED zone; new use application zone; device, parts, and materials zone; measurement and testing systems zone. The general lighting zone hosts office lighting, shop lighting, home lighting (interior and exterior), factory lighting, stage and exhibit lighting, street lights, floodlights, dimmers, lighting control systems, LED modules, LED bulbs, straight-tube LED lamps, etc.. The OLED zone features OLED panels, OLED lighting products, and OLED devices, among others. In the new use application zone, highlighted products include agricultural lighting, medical lighting, fishery lighting, vehicle lighting, visible light communication technology, ultraviolet LED, laser diodes, and so on.

The device, parts, and materials zone is dedicated to LED chips, power-supply devices, drivers, lenses, light-guiding plates, diffuser plates, reflective plates, heat-dissipation materials, heat sinks, pastes, wires, fluorescent substances, encapsulating materials, lead frames, LED substrates, glass substrates, film, OLED materials, etc. The  measurement and testing systems zone includes  photometry and colorimetry devices, luminance measurement systems, illumination measurement systems, light distribution measurement systems, aging devices, and other measurement and testing systems.

LED Next Stage 2014 is held alongside Architecture + Construction Materials, RetailTech Japan, Japan Shop, IC Card World, Security Show, and Franchise Show at Tokyo International Exhibition Center, also known as “Tokyo Big Sight”. Together, the seven shows are estimated to attract 250,000 visitors based on the 2012 edition, which drew 240,000-plus visitors and 1,250 exhibitors in 3,300 booths.

According to Japan's market consultants, the Ministry of Economic, Trade and Industry set the goal in its 2010-revised New Basic Energy Policy Draft to cut household CO2 emission of the world's No. 3 economy to only half that of 1990 by 2030. Given that household lighting consumes at least one fifth of Japan's total electricity a year, using energy-efficient lighting equipment as LED will be pivotal to the Japanese government's emission-reduction plan.

Japan's market for LED light bulbs has grown significantly since the aftermath of the 311 Earthquake of 2011. Unlike other countries, Japan's LED-lighting market has been mostly driven by households. In 2013, Japanese LED-lighting makers mainly focused on indoor applications by rolling out light tubes, panel lights, and ceiling lamps for households and stores.

The organizers estimate LED-lighting manufacturers will double in number in the near term worldwide thanks to technical improvement and application increases. (KL)
