While Everlight Electronics Co., Ltd. saw its revenue increase to 29% of the total by Taiwan's top-10 LED packagers in 2013 from 2012's 24%, Epistar Corp. meanwhile racked up 53% of  total revenue by the island's top-10 LED chipmakers from around 46%, according to the nonprofit Photonics Industry & Technology Development Association (PIDA).

PIDA interprets such situation as a snowball effect: the big players continue to grow bigger and second-tier manufacturers in both sectors should diversify operations to cope.

The organization's statistics show the combined revenue of the island's top-10 LED packagers and module makers rose 12% year on year from 2012's NT$75.8 billion (US$2.5 billion), to NT$85 billion last year, whereas the combined revenue of the island's top- 10 LED chipmakers slipped 2% to NT$41.9 billion (US$1.4 billion), which PIDA views as  the value of Taiwan's LED industry shifting downstream from the upstream sector.

By revenue, Epistar and Everlight topped Taiwan's LED chipmakers and packagers in 2013, respectively.

Epistar had revenue of NT$22.2 billion (US$741.6 million), up 12% from 2012. Formosa Epitaxy Inc. (FOREPI) was ranked the No.2 chipmaker and Genesis Photonics Inc. the No.3.

Everlight raked in revenue of NT$24.6 billion (US$823 million), followed by Lite-On Technology Corp.'s NT$14.3 billion (US$477.8 million), and Lextar Electronics Corp.'s NT$13 billion (US$434.9 million). Unity Opto Technology Co., Ltd. was the No.5 packager, with revenue of NT$6.9 billion (US$230.6 million).

Together, the island's top-10 LED chipmakers and top-10 packagers-cum-module-makers produced NT$127 billion (US$4.2 billion) in 2013, up 6.9% from 2012's NT$118.8 billion (US$3.9 billion), according to PIDA.

The organization feels  competition for the island's second-tier makers is intensifying, judging from the widening scale gap between the island's top-tier and second-tier makers in both LED chip-making and packaging, suggesting the second-tier makers should carve out niche applications to survive.
