Upbeat Led Lighting Market Outlook to Raise Drive IC Shipments in 2014

2014/01/07 | By Ken Liu

Market consultant LEDinside forecasts the upbeat 2014 outlook of the LED lighting market to raise shipments of drive ICs worldwide.

The organization projects global markets for both LED light tubes and light bulbs to each grow 89% and 86% year on year in 2014 thanks to steadily  declining LED lighting price, to further fuel purchasing LED lamps to replace traditional lamps.

The organization points out that despite declining prices, luminous efficacy of LED lamps has kept improving to shorten cycle of cost recoupment to motivate  purchases.

Based on optimistic outlook, Taiwan's IC design houses, including On-Bright Electronics Co., Ltd., Silergy Corp., Champion Microelectronic Corp. and Macroblock Inc., are vigorously developing presence in the LED lighting market.

Industry executives estimate drive ICs for LED lighting to account for over 30% of On-Bright's total revenue of around NT$3 billion (US$100 million) for 2014, with the remaining to be generated by power-management ICs for tablet PCs and smartphones.

Silergy's China subsidiary has landed contracts from LED-lighting manufacturers Philips, NVC Lighting Holding Ltd., and Everlight Electronic Co., Ltd, estimating revenue for 2014 to grow 20-30%.

Champion Microelectronic has recently migrated to LED drive IC field from ICs for game consoles, applying for verifications on its LED drive ICs at American and Japanese lighting heavyweights.

After topping all competitors in supplying drive ICs for high-definition LED digital billboards, Macroblock is moving into drive ICs used in LED general lighting. The company projects lighting drive ICs to account for 20% of its revenue for 2014, up from scant 10% in 2013. (KL)
